I was going to thank him for his time and that I appreciated the effort he put into me. I simply didn’t have the experience or the intelligence to complete the program. Toward the end of my freshman year, I walked to my professors office to tell him that I didn’t think I was cut out for music. They told me it would be hard, especially without any experience.

I got so many skeptical looks when I told them that I wanted to become a composer. When we went around the table introducing our background, the class laughed at me when they found out I had never taken a music class before…that I only played guitar. I was the only one in my classes who had never had any formal training. My peers had studied AP music classes, played in orchestras since childhood or even gone to a music-intensive high school. I entered my classes and quickly found out that I was at a disadvantage. I was scared, but I knew that, if I worked hard, I could get the degree I desired so strongly. I entered the Scripps music department with no previous musical knowledge. This was particularly relevant to me during my college years. We may not all be geniuses, but being resilient and hard-working can bring a person to the same level field. To become the best physical fighter was Lee’s goal and he was intent on showing the world that his hard work could pay off. He developed a bond with Guy so close that he became a sort of father to Lee. Rather than succumb to what he could not do…Guy showed Lee that he should focus and perfect what he could do.īecause of this focus, Lee began to achieve his dream for both himself and in order to make his teacher proud. If he only had one route to achieving his goals, then he should focus on that one route to completion. Guy taught him to turn his weaknesses into strengths. Lee received the support he needed to focus on his goals. A teacher by the name of Might Guy saw his determination and decided to take him on as a student. Unfortunately, Lee didn’t see much progress and started to get discouraged. He pushed himself to his limits and set outrageous goals for himself. Despite this discouragement, Lee trained harder and harder. As a child, his peers told him that he would never be a ninja. He relies completely on his own will to fight and his physical capabilities. He is the only ninja who cannot do any sort of supernatural fighting techniques (like shooting fire or disappearing). If any of you have seen the anime, you would know that Rock Lee is considered a “failure” at the beginning of the series. You might wonder what this has to do with Rock Lee. Much to my mother’s chagrin, I also had received a $46,000 a year scholarship. With their help, Pitzer College sent me letter declaring that it wanted me to enroll in their undergraduate program. I studied the best I could, participated in theatre, wrestling and focused on my music. Because of them, I fought harder and harder. They told me that, if I worked hard, I could reach any dream I sought after.

His guitar.Įvery child needs an adult to support them.Īs Rock Lee had Guy to support him, Arlene and Arline were there to tell me that I wasn’t worthless. I pulled it toward me and took off the wrapping paper. I started crying before I even took a step toward it. In my heart, I knew what it was but I wanted to see in before my eyes. The Christmas after my 14th birthday, I woke up and found a long, rectangular box under the tree. I told him that I dreamed about it, I thought about it everyday…that I just wanted to express myself in ways I had not experienced before. I told of him of the passion growing within my heart. At this point, my mother and my father were divorced and I only kept in contact with him over the phone. I wasn’t playing the music, yet I could still feel it.įor years, I asked my mother to help me get a guitar. I would listen to the Gerudo Valley theme over and over again…moving my fingers with the melody. I would spend nights in my room crying, imagining I had a guitar in my hands. It’s a waste of time and money.” I grew increasingly frustrated. You’ll give it up just like you give everything up. “No”, she said, “Why should I bother buying you a guitar? You can’t do it. I wanted to play like the music I had heard in the Zelda game. Throughout those years, I mentioned to my mother that I wanted a guitar. Practice hard and you will.” I will never forget those words. I looked up at my father with wide eyes, “Dad…I want to learn to play guitar like that.” He laughed to himself and said, “You will, son.
